Banners for Worship
Article by Lana Shea
Banners give a visual expression to a worship service. Color, texture and shape add to the symbolic nature of Art.
As you consider your banner pray that God will show you what is the theme or subject of your next banner. Ask the pastor if he senses a timely theme for the church. If the banner making in your church is limited by financial resources and by time required by the banner making team, it is best to keep the theme something that will last over a long time frame.
For example, we had a two month study on Building Up the church. Our building Up banner was very timely with symbols and lettering on building blocks that the pastor used each Sunday. Even though it was a good visual for his sermons, at the end of the two month study it was too specific to current with the ongoing flow of the church. Instead of making each building block a topic of the sermon, we could have keep the Words “Build Up” and simplified the symbols to keep it current with a general principle that we should always build up one another. The special banner was still a blessing but the banner team needed to make a new one very soon after the hours of work.
To save on the expense of the new banner, we reused the rod and side curtains which helped us fill out the new banner. The theme of the new banner “Enter His Presence” expresses a timely message that the Lord seems to be impressing for our church. It also is a general message that is appropriate for all time.
I prayed about the theme and felt the Lord give this too me. I drew the ideas and
redrew them several times before showing the pastor and the Elder Board. Pastor
committed to pray over the new banner design and after a 4-
Your pastor may or may not want to pray over
each banner design. He may tell you to take freedom to do whatever you wish, however it is a good idea to submit the design on paper before the actual construction. Sometimes your initial design may inspire your pastor’s ideas for a little different twist on the subject. Work with your leadership in the way they choose and God will reward your work all the more.
Most of the time our pastor has immediately agreed to any design I have proposed with some helpful suggestions. Even though he trusts my discernment and artistic ability, he also appreciates the value of the banners, he does
not take it lightly. Though I may have to exercise patience in the wait, I am gratified that the our banner team’s work is valued.
To make the time the banner team spends on a project more effective, I find a multiple task guide sheet very helpful.
I list all the jobs that need to be done and number them according to any sequence that must take place. All the jobs that could be done without needing to complete another or that need to be done first have a #1 beside them. Those jobs that need something to be done before it can be completed would be #2 and so on.
